Challenge

The sand dune bordering the Cap Malheureux Cemetery was being eroded due to Wave action. A method of containing the cemetery and preventing the wash-away of human remains, was required. A retaining system was needed which could withstand the occasional cyclonic conditions and also retain the sand to a maximum height of 5,8m.

Solution

A Gabion revetment was constructed using 2x1x0,5 PVC coated gabions. The first 4 rows of the wall (2m high) were laid in HEADER fashion to absorb the vertical impact of waves during cyclonic conditions. The upper layers were laid in STRETCHER BOND fashion. A geotextile filter fabric was placed behind the gabions.
