Maintenance on Highway No. 1, Lam Sai (Outbound) – at Km. 56+000
Thailand
The Bureau of Survey and Design, Department of Highways, undertook the improvement and rehabilitation of a U-turn bridge on Highway No. 1 at Lam Sai (Outbound), Ayutthaya Province. The project involved resurfacing the asphalt pavement with a new asphalt concrete layer over a total width of 29. 50 meters, covering the section from Km. 55+075 to Km. 56+300 (1. 225 km in length). The budget for asphalt resurfacing work alone was approximately THB 15 million. The original pavement structure was constructed with concrete. The project aimed to rehabilitate the existing surface by overlaying it with asphalt concrete to improve fatigue resistance and minimize rutting. Although the resurfaced pavement initially achieved satisfactory structural performance, cracks like those found in the deteriorated original surface often reappeared shortly after opening to traffic. These cracks — known as reflective cracking — significantly reduce the road’s performance and service life.

SUNSET CLIFF

The two towers that make up the Sunset Cliff complex rise from the top of a slope composed of marl and anthropogenic fill, located just behind the beach. Due to the irregular topography and surface instability, it was decided to reshape the slope's profile through a significant excavation campaign to create different elevation levels. This allowed the architects to meet the owner's requests for recreational spaces at the base of the slope, terraced green areas, swimming pools, access roads, and parking areas at the top. Following the natural terrain orientation, three areas of intervention were defined: North, West, and East, each of which required different earth retention systems to ensure the stability of the remodeled slope.

TARLAC-NUEVA ECIJA PROVINCIAL ROAD

The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) Second Engineering District of Tarlac Province has approved the improvement and rehabilitation works of the 512 meters long stretch of a concrete-paved provincial highway in La Paz, Tarlac, Philippines. The existing concrete pavement was severely damaged where cracks, potholes, and dilapidated surfaces were observed. A new surfacing course using asphalt was designed by DPWH engineers for the project. However, to avoid total removal of existing concrete pavement while maintaining or ensuring the design life of the new asphalt surface course for the highway, an alternative reinforcing mechanism was required by DPWH engineers.
