TACLOBAN BYPASS ROAD

Problem

Tacloban Bypass Road is a 6.4-kilometer four-lane road designed to improve the accessibility of the road network and decongest the traffic in the city’s major highway. The new bypass road will also help in promoting the development of the surrounding rural communities. Once completed, it shall form part of the “Strong Republic” nautical highway that connects the 7,100 islands of the Philippines in a seamless infrastructure network providing inter-model land, air, and sea transport. The highway cuts-through a mountains in certain sections. The cut-slopes present the following risks: (1) erosion of soil (2) dislodgement of rocks leading to rockfall events, and (3) localized slope failure from surfacial instability.

Solution

Maccaferri Philippines provided technical and design assistance in the construction of the 37,000 square meters slope protection works in the upland sections of the highway. The project utilized Steelgrid HR 30, an advanced and patented mesh system that offers higher stiffness, higher tensile strength, and higher punching resistance.
