RIVER BANK PROTECTON IN PIDDIG, ILOCOS NORTE

Piddig River, situated in the Province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines, has been facing a persistent and escalating erosion issue over the years. This erosion not only threatens the natural beauty of the region but also imperils the very foundations of the community, including homes, businesses, and the overall well-being of its residents. Given these challenges, it is crucial to find a robust and sustainable solution to safeguard the Piddig River and its surroundings.

To address this concern, a comprehensive site assessment was conducted, which identified vulnerable areas along the riverbank. Maccaferri's Strong Face Gabions, well-known for their durability and resistance to hydraulic pressure were installed. These gabions served as longitudinal hydraulic work protection for erosion, effectively safeguarding the riverbanks.

The abundance of boulders in the area allowed us to use gabions while also utilizing locally sourced materials, making the project both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. This approach minimized the need for transporting materials from distant locations. Moreover, it had a minimal impact on the environment and infrastructure, enabling uninterrupted river use while providing the necessary protection.

The use of Strong Face Gabions ensures long-lasting protection for the riverbanks, as demonstrated by their effectiveness in resisting corrosion and erosion. This project serves as a prime example of how we Maccaferri leverage local resources and innovative engineering to mitigate environmental challenges while delivering lasting benefits to the community.
