Reinforced Soil Walls and Slope Reinforcement in General Santos
Challenge
A section along the San Jose – T’boli Road in General Santos City was highly susceptible to slope instability due to persistent and intense rainfall throughout the year. Prolonged soil saturation gradually weakened the slope, reducing its shear strength and overall stability.
During a period of heavy rains, the already weakened slope eventually collapsed, resulting in a significant road slip. This failure disrupted access along the roadway and created hazardous conditions for motorists passing through the area.
The situation became more critical due to the presence of a nearby national high school, which faced potential risk from further ground movement. The incident emphasized the urgent need for a durable and long-term stabilization solution to prevent recurring failures and ensure public safety.
Solution
To address the slope failure and protect the surrounding community, a permanent stabilization measure was implemented using a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Wall with MacCell® facing. This engineered system was selected to provide both structural support and long-term resilience against heavy rainfall conditions.
The wall, measuring 12 meters in height and 120 meters in length, reinforces the soil mass and restores the stability of the affected slope. Its design ensures that the structure can withstand continued exposure to rainfall while preventing further movement or erosion.
In addition to stabilizing the slope, the solution enabled the safe rehabilitation and widening of the road, improving accessibility and safety for daily users. With the completed structure in place, both motorists and the nearby school are now protected from future slope failures and associated hazards.
