Erosion Control at the Hiking Trail of PHirst Park Homes in Lipa, Batangas
Challenge
The hiking trail within PHirst Park Homes in Lipa City, Batangas has experienced progressive surficial erosion following multiple typhoons that delivered heavy and sustained rainfall. Rainwater moving downslope became concentrated along the trail, gradually removing the protective topsoil and exposing less stable underlying layers. Noticeable depressions began to form on the trail surface and deepened with successive storms, resulting in uneven and hazardous conditions. The gradual loss of vegetative cover weakened the slope’s ability to hold soil in place. With continued rainfall, runoff followed the trail path and intensified its erosive impact. This situation underscores the slope’s susceptibility to recurring erosion during typhoon events.
Solution
In response to the recurring surficial erosion along the hiking trail, PHirst Park Homes’ engineering department engaged Maccaferri to provide a practical and effective solution. Following a detailed evaluation of the erosion pattern, slope conditions, and site limitations, MacMat R1005 was identified as the most appropriate measure to stabilize the trail surface. The constrained space along the alignment made traditional structural options, such as retaining walls, impractical. MacMat R1005 offers surface protection that controls erosion while allowing vegetation to reestablish, directly addressing the root causes of soil loss. This approach provides a reliable and site-appropriate solution to mitigate ongoing typhoon-induced erosion along the trail.
