Maccaferri’s Automated Steel Rib Technology in the Terzo Valico project recognised at the Ita Tunnelling Awards 2026

The solution developed by the Group contributes to operator safety and the efficiency of construction activities in the complex geological conditions of the railway infrastructure

Officine Maccaferri’s automated steel rib technology contributes to the innovation recognised at the ITA Tunnelling Awards 2026 as part of the overall Terzo Valico project, carried out by the General Contractor led by Webuild on behalf of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. The award, presented to Webuild by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES) in the “Technical Innovation of the Year” category, recognises the primary tunnel support installation system adopted to address the complex geotechnical conditions of the project.

Maccaferri’s automated Steel Ribs are an advanced mechanical system for primary lining in tunnelling, designed to place operator safety at the core of the installation process. Thanks to a fully mechanized installation system, the solution enables greater precision and faster operations while avoiding the need for personnel to be directly present near the excavation face, one of the most critical areas of the construction site as it has not yet been supported. In this way, automation contributes to risk prevention by reducing operators’ exposure to hazards associated with this phase of work.

These benefits are particularly relevant at the Terzo Valico construction sites, which are characterised by complex geological conditions and high stresses on support structures. In this context, Maccaferri’s technology has helped address the safety and efficiency requirements of construction activities, complementing the design and operational expertise of the parties involved in delivering the infrastructure.

The recognition confirms Officine Maccaferri’s role as a leading technology partner in the tunnelling sector and the Group’s ability to translate research and engineering expertise into practical solutions for the country’s major infrastructure projects, helping to improve the safety of people working on construction sites.
