Challenge

A recent disaster was minimised to a mere inconvenience when rocks tumbling down were trapped in the protective rockfall netting along the Ipoh - Cangkat Jering Expressway. The granite hills were known to be unstable and measures were taken by Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (PLUS) to ensure safety to motorists.

Solution

About 25m³ of granite came falling down but was stopped from tubling onto the highway by steel safety netting covering the rock face. The rocks fell 5m into a trap (drain).
