The Ash Yard of the Thermal Power Plant

Problem

The Punta Catalina thermoelectric power plant is the most important electricity generator in the Dominican Republic, as it produces 30% of the country’s electricity. Its source of generation is coal, and as a byproduct of this process, residue known as ASH is produced. This ash is destined for confined cells due to its high content of heavy metals, preventing environmental damage to both the subsoil and the dispersal of volatile ashes in the air.

Solution

The creation of cells was carried out, protected with geosynthetics both at their base and in the closure, with three levels of impermeable protection to prevent the leakage or escape of volatile particles. This project is the first environmentally sound Sanitary Landfill project with high-quality standards at an international level throughout the Caribbean, recognized by internationally renowned firms. Each cell is designed to store an average of 360,000 cubic meters of ash.
