Rockfall Protection for Kenyir Dam Ancillary Road
Heavy monsoon rainfall triggered major landslides and rockfalls across the hills surrounding the Sultan Mahmud Hydroelectric Power Station at Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu.
Slope instability in the area is influenced by a combination of steep terrain, tropical weathering and intense seasonal rainfall. The surrounding geology primarily comprises granite and metamorphic rock formations, with steep artificial cut slopes created during the construction of the dam, spillways, access roads and intake towers.
To mitigate the severe rockfall hazards affecting the dam area and its ancillary road, engineers installed the EPFM 5000 flexible rockfall barrier system at strategic elevations along the affected slopes.
The flexible catch fences are designed to intercept high-velocity falling rocks and debris, absorbing impact energies of up to 5,000 kilojoules. This provides a reliable passive protection system that reduces the risk of rockfall reaching the road and other critical infrastructure.
Working alongside slope anchoring and surface-drainage measures, the EPFM 5000 system strengthens the site’s overall protection strategy and helps maintain safer access during extreme monsoon conditions.
