US-NORTHPARK AT FRESH KILLS

Problem

NYC Parks Department is creating parkland from the decommissioned Fresh Kills Landfill. They were looking for a a retaining wall system to help create the roadway and pedestrian walkway leading up to a lookout area and comfort station. They wanted a system that would be able to be vegetated in order to blend into the park like surroundings.

Solution

The Green Terramesh was chosen as the best solution since it can be live staked in order to provide the green wall that they were looking for. They were able to bury sonotubes in the top of the wall during installation as locations for a necessary guard rail to be installed later on in the project. They were also able to prepare the locations during installation where trees will be planted along the top of the wall. They achieved this by marking the location of each tree and placing a round steel form in that area and filling with the appropriate soil. Then they would backfill the form with the wall fill material then remove the form.
