Maccaferri uses Gabion and Reno Mattress solutions to mitigate erosion

Maccaferri South Africa uses a Gabion and Reno Mattress combination solution to resolve a bank erosion query in Umzinto

Maccaferri is the undisputed worldwide leader in solutions requiring the use of Gabion baskets. Our gabions are cages which are engineered from double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh. Delivered flat-packed, our gabions are assembled and then filled with stones at the project site. Given this, these solutions provide clients with a cost-efficient and user-friendly alternative to older, less developed alternatives.

There are numerous uses for these modular units. They are typically used to form flexible, permeable and monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, hydraulic control structures and erosion protection. They are increasingly being employed in architectural applications as well.

Our gabion baskets are made from high-quality steel wire, which is heavily galvanized to provide long-term corrosion protection. An additional protective polymeric coating is also applied for gabions that are to be used in more aggressive environments, or where a longer design life is required.

Gabions are frequently used in combination with Reno Mattress, another one of our product lines made from high-quality steel wire, which is heavily galvanized.

A 2008 riverside protection project located in Umzinto aptly exemplifies how a Gabion and Reno Mattress combination solution can resolve erosion queries efficiently.

In June 2008, Umzinto was faced with torrential rains and floods that led to a general erosion of the river banks caused by a build up of water on the flat portion of the river. The damages resulted in the relocation of some existing sewer lines and posed a risk to the surrounding community hall, sites, and houses.

After the heavy rains had subsided, the river banks required a protective liner to prevent further erosion. The alternatives considered were the use of cast in-situ concrete or the use of flexible gabions and mattresses.

Instead of opting for a cement based solution, the client chose to use a Gabions and Reno mattress combination solution designed to protect the river for a length of approximately 470 meters, and heights varying from 1.3 to 4.5 meters.

The Gabion and Reno Mattress combination solution afforded job opportunities for the community as a labor intensive solution.
