Maccaferri Africa identified the need to provide Gabion Installation training to subcontractors, to assist the main contractor in ensuring quality workmanship.
Maccaferri Africa approached the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractor (SAFCEC) with the concept of training small contractors on Gabion installation, and SAFCEC accepted the idea of providing the contractors with the opportunity to upskill. With SAFCEC’s approval, Maccaferri Africa began preparations for the training, which included a presentation on Gabions, as well as practical on-site training of gabion installations.
SAFCEC sent out invitations to their contractors, inviting them to be part of the training, being the first of its kind. This Gabion training was new to Maccaferri Africa, as usually this is done for contractors already working on site.
On Thursday, 27th August 2015, 15 attendees arrived at SAFCEC House in Bedfordview, Gauteng, ready to begin the training. The Gabion Installation training focussed on:
1. Theory of Gabions:
• Products training on Gabions, Mattresses and Mactex (Geotextile)
• Interpretation of Technical Drawings and Technical Data Sheets
• Structure of reading the products for the Gabions – Bill of Quantities
• Correct pricing of gabion walls (hidden expenses)
2. Practical: Construction
• Placing of Mactex (Geotextile)
• Setting up of Gabions (lacing)
• Packing of rock (bracing)
• Closing of Gabions
Overall, the Gabion Installation training was a great success, with the contractors complementing both Maccaferri Africa and SAFCEC on organising the course training.
Most of the contractors are happy as they feel that they are now equipped with the skills and can return to site and teach their colleagues all that they have learnt. Due to the great response received from the attendees, Maccaferri Africa and SAFCEC will continue to provide the Gabion Installation training.
