    The Mersey Gateway Project is a landmark infrastructure development in Cheshire, designed to deliver a vital north\u2013south transport link and significantly reduce congestion on the overburdened Silver Jubilee Bridge. For years, the existing crossing struggled with high traffic volumes, causing delays and limiting regional connectivity. The new Mersey Gateway Bridge aims to resolve these issues while enabling the Silver Jubilee Bridge to be repurposed as a local crossing.<\/p>\n

    This large-scale project includes the construction of a 2.3 km-long cable-stayed bridge spanning approximately 1 km across the River Mersey, supported by pylons ranging from 80 to 125 meters in height. In addition, the scheme involves around 9.5 km of new and upgraded highways, alongside major reconfiguration works at key locations such as Ditton Junction, Widnes Loops, Bridgewater, Halton Lea, Lodge Lane, Weston Point, and M56 Junction 12.<\/p>\n

    One of the primary engineering challenges was the presence of soft ground conditions across significant sections of the site, particularly along the northern approach embankments. These weak soils posed risks of excessive settlement, reduced stability, and long-term performance issues for both embankments and road structures. Given the project\u2019s status as one of the UK government\u2019s top 40 priority infrastructure schemes and its delivery under a public-private partnership model, achieving a durable, safe, and cost-effective solution was critical.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

    To overcome the challenges associated with soft soils and ensure long-term infrastructure performance, Maccaferri provided an advanced ground engineering solution using Paralink high-strength geogrids. These geogrids were installed as basal reinforcement beneath embankments along the northern bridge approach and surrounding road network, including key areas such as Ditton Junction and Widnes Loops.<\/p>\n

    Paralink geogrids were selected due to their exceptional tensile strength, low creep properties, and proven performance in ground stabilisation applications. Acting as a reinforcement layer, they distribute loads effectively, improve embankment stability, and minimise differential settlement over weak subgrades. This made them an ideal solution for supporting heavy transport infrastructure in challenging ground conditions.<\/p>\n

    Maccaferri worked in close collaboration with the project designers, AECOM, to optimise the design and ensure compliance with industry standards. The specification and selection of Paralink grades were carried out in accordance with BS 8006:2010, ensuring a reliable and code-compliant design approach.<\/p>\n

    As a result, Maccaferri played a key role in delivering a resilient and long-lasting infrastructure solution for the Mersey Gateway Project. The use of geogrid reinforcement technology not only enhanced structural performance but also contributed to the successful delivery of one of the UK\u2019s most important transport developments.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>
