Along a 60 m section of pedestrian pathway in Nottinghamshire, significant bank slippage occurred at several points along a small watercourse, threatening the stability of the path and surrounding ground. The erosion posed a risk to public safety and required an effective riverbank stabilisation solution to prevent further soil movement and long-term degradation of the embankment.<\/p>\n

Previous sections of the same watercourse had been stabilised using sheet piling. However, the project location presented additional constraints as the affected area was situated behind residential gardens within a densely populated neighbourhood. Installation of sheet piles typically involves noisy and vibration-intensive equipment, which had already resulted in complaints from residents during earlier works.<\/p>\n

To mitigate these concerns, the contractor considered using vibrationless installation rigs. However, the temporary works required to accommodate this equipment would significantly increase project costs and make the solution financially unviable. In addition to these constraints, the site had restricted access and limited working space, further complicating the installation process.<\/p>\n

As a result, the project required a cost-effective, low-disturbance erosion control solution capable of stabilising the riverbank while minimising noise, vibration, and disruption to nearby residents.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Maccaferri proposed the use of Polimac-coated woven gabion baskets<\/strong> as a durable and cost-effective solution for watercourse bank protection and erosion control. Gabion retaining structures are well-suited for riverbank stabilisation because they provide both structural support and permeability, allowing water to flow through the structure while preventing soil loss.<\/p>\n

The Polimac coating offers enhanced corrosion resistance, making the gabions particularly suitable for long-term installation within aquatic environments. The stone-filled gabion baskets retain the soil behind the structure while providing a natural aesthetic finish that integrates well with the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n

Due to the tight project timeframe and the requirement to reopen the pedestrian pathway quickly, the contractor requested pre-filled gabion baskets<\/strong>. In addition, the restricted site conditions meant that filling gabions on site would be difficult and inefficient.<\/p>\n

To meet these requirements, Maccaferri supplied Cubimac pre-filled gabion units<\/strong>, which are manufactured using a specialised steel frame system and compacted on a vibrating shaking table to ensure optimal stone compaction. Each unit is fitted with polyester round lifting slings, enabling safe and efficient handling using standard lifting equipment during installation.<\/p>\n

To maintain construction progress while accommodating site limitations, Maccaferri organised the supply of materials in two stages. The first batch consisted of readily available pre-filled gabion baskets along with a number of empty baskets. This allowed the contractor to begin installation immediately and continue construction while the second batch of pre-filled units was being prepared.<\/p>\n

Once the first batch had been installed and space became available on site, the second batch of Cubimac units was delivered. This staged delivery approach ensured a continuous construction process while avoiding delays caused by limited storage space and restricted site access.<\/p>\n

Throughout the project, close communication between Maccaferri and the on-site contractors ensured that deliveries were carefully scheduled to align with the installation programme. This coordination enabled efficient installation and allowed the pedestrian pathway to be reopened to the public within the required timeframe.<\/p>\n

The completed gabion structure successfully stabilised the riverbank, prevented further erosion, and provided a durable and environmentally sympathetic solution. By using pre-filled gabion baskets instead of traditional piling methods, the project avoided noise and vibration issues while delivering a cost-effective and visually natural bank protection system.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>
