At a constrained pinch point adjacent to a car park, the client required a reliable retaining wall solution to stabilise the site boundary and prevent erosion and soil migration. The restricted working area and proximity to existing infrastructure meant that the solution needed to be both space-efficient and structurally dependable.<\/p>\n

The primary challenge arose from the ground conditions. Site investigations confirmed that the proposed Gabion retaining wall would be founded on Made Ground, consisting of firm, slightly gravelly clay extending to depths of up to 5.8 metres below ground level. Made Ground is widely recognised in geotechnical engineering as an unreliable founding material due to its variable composition, low bearing capacity, and susceptibility to differential settlement.<\/p>\n

These conditions posed a significant risk to the performance of a gravity retaining wall system. The retained material behind the structure was also classified as soft to firm Made Ground, increasing the likelihood of post-construction movement and long-term settlement. This combination of weak founding and retained soils required a solution capable of accommodating deformation while maintaining stability.<\/p>\n

In addition, the design needed to support a live load surcharge of 10 kN\/m\u00b2 acting on the retained slope, without imposing additional loading at the crest due to spatial constraints associated with the adjacent car park. The key requirement was to deliver a retaining wall system that ensured long-term stability, controlled settlement, and maintained structural integrity under challenging geotechnical conditions.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Maccaferri collaborated with Geoman to develop a robust and reliable retaining wall solution using advanced geotechnical analysis. The design was carried out using Macstars software, enabling detailed assessment of internal stability, sliding resistance, and overturning performance of the Gabion wall founded on Made Ground.<\/p>\n

This comprehensive modelling approach verified that a Gabion retaining wall could perform effectively despite the sub-optimal ground conditions. A 4 mm welded mesh Gabion wall was selected as the optimal solution due to its mass, durability, and inherent flexibility. Unlike rigid structures, Gabion walls can tolerate differential settlement, making them particularly suitable for sites with variable ground conditions such as Made Ground.<\/p>\n

To further enhance performance, the design incorporated compacted Class 6N\/6F2 granular backfill. This improved load distribution behind the wall while providing effective drainage, reducing hydrostatic pressure and minimising settlement risks. These measures ensured that the retaining wall system would maintain long-term stability and serviceability.<\/p>\n

A 1.2-metre-high safety fence was also integrated at the crest of the wall to meet site safety and access requirements. The design successfully accommodated the specified live load of 10 kN\/m\u00b2, ensuring the structure could withstand operational demands without compromising the crest area.<\/p>\n

The final solution delivered a high-performance Gabion retaining wall system tailored to challenging ground conditions and spatial constraints. By combining detailed geotechnical analysis with a flexible and durable retaining structure, the project achieved long-term stability, effective erosion control, and reduced settlement risk.<\/p>\n

This case demonstrates the effectiveness of Gabion retaining walls for construction on Made Ground, particularly where flexibility, drainage, and adaptability are critical. The solution provided the client with confidence in both the safety and longevity of the installation, while meeting all operational and design requirements.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>
