Flexmac DT used to provide a temporary retaining structure before installing Macwall at the Eastern Bay Road Link that will connect the the A4232 with the A48 Roundabout
Maccaferri engineer Alex Jones, has been working on a project at the East Bay Link and working closely with Dawnus Construction Holdings. The Eastern Bay Link is a road that will connect Cardiff with the east of the capital. Costing around £27.3m the multidisciplinary company Capita has been chosen to design the project.
The Welsh government awarded the construction work to Dawnus Construction Holdings and Ferrovial Agroman UK. The Eastern Bay Link Road is to connect the A4232 with the A48 Ocean Way Roundabout which is situated at the east of the city. The new route will create a continuous route from the M4 to Cardiff Bay and is expected to be opened December 2016. Maccaferri’s FlexMac DT is being used as a temporary retaining structure before the Installation of MacWall. Maccaferri uses FlexMac DT for flood protection, to raise embankments and provide buttressing support for temporary works.
FlexMac DT is the multicellular structure made from hexagonal double twisted wire mesh. Vertical steel rods reinforce the mesh and each cell of the unit is lined with a non-woven geotextile sleeve. This containment cell means that it can be filled with many fill types, including locally sourced materials. The material used to fill the FlexMac DT units on this occasion was Type 1 Slag material, over the whole 77m length of the structure.
This temporary retaining wall enabled the insertion of the long-term retaining wall system, MacWall; this segmental blockwork retaining wall system combines the aesthetics of masonry walls with the engineered reassurance of reinforced earth. Segmental block retaining walls (“SRW”s) are increasing in popularity due to their ease of construction, cost-effectiveness and versatility.
The project, still on the way to being finished, is a good example of how two Maccaferri products can be used in conjunction with each other to provide clients with a customized solution for their needs. Moreover, by working closely with Dawnus Construction Holdings, an international civil engineering and building company, and Ferrovial Agroman UK, Maccaferri was able to exchange ideas and solutions. Some might even say, “great minds, think alike”.
