Two reinforced soil walls were designed for Pontprennau Primary School in Wales

MacWall Vertica reinforced with ParaGrid geogrids was used in a perimeter wall for the new school

We were appointed to design and build two soil reinforcement walls for the perimeter of a new school in Wales, Pontprennau Primary School.

The first wall retains the ground away from the school at the rear of the site. The wall is 48m long and uses our geogrid ParaGrid in the backfill for reinforcement. We also used MacDrain drainage geocomposite at the rear of the wall to collect water, allowing it to escape and prevent hydrostatic pressure build up.

The second wall is to retain the car park area using Macwall Vertica 4°. The geogrids extended 3m into the structural backfill, reinforcing it.

MacDrain is used to replace traditional granular drainage columns or layers. A 3-dimensional polymer drainage core matrix is sandwiched between geotextiles to form a single layer product which removes the need for granular materials and is lightweight to handle and install.

Pontprennau is situated East of the city of Cardiff with a population of over 8,000 which has expanded since the growth of the housing development. Pontprennau sits next to the M4 motorway giving it good access to other parts of the country and homes a large community with local amenities and well-known brand stores making it a well-established place to live.
