The Colorado highway, US 550 Red Mountain Pass has been vulnerable to rockfalls due to its topography and geology.
A recent closure was caused by a large rockfall onto the carriageway. Working within a very short timescale on a technically challenging and steep site, the Colorado DOT team and their specialist contractors, carried out remedial works including descaling and the installation of high strength, low strain, Maccaferri mesh systems.
The high strength mesh was lifted into position using helicopters; a challenge in this mountainous region. The road has since been reopened to traffic. Congratulations to the project team for this exciting project.
