Architectural Gabion Wall gives UK Major Retailers New Store the Edge
Maccaferri were instrumental in the design and construction of over 1000sq metres of gabion façade on a new John Lewis & Waitrose Joint Store in Basingstoke which is part of £200 million regeneration scheme on M3 corridor.
Work began last summer on a flag-ship John Lewis & Waitrose combined store at Basingstoke. The store is only the third co-located development in the history of the John Lewis Partnership.
Covering 46,000 sq ft, the John Lewis “at home” store is the largest to date with an investment by the retailer of £6M.
Coupled to a 26,000 sq ft Waitrose supermarket, this combined store created over 359 retail jobs and will be the closest store for many shoppers in north-east Hampshire and west Surrey.
Contractors Bowmer and Kirkland were the main contractor appointed by Muse Developments (Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council’s Development Partner) to construct the 110,000 sq ft development. This enterprise offers 73,000 sq ft of retail floor space within a £200 million regeneration scheme which will deliver around 650,000 sq ft of new commercial led development over 15 acres. Ultimately this will be a mix of new office space, a business class hotel, public realm and improved transport links making this an excellent regional business destination on the M3 corridor.
Maccaferri Ltd worked alongside the main contractor and the client with the design for the buildings gabion facades. With the design process not starting until July 2015 and the construction phase starting in September it was a challenge to complete the build in time for the grand opening on 12thNovember 2015.
Maccaferri accomplished this tight deadline by precise design and planning and utilising a 7 day per week shift system of up to 20 men each day to construct the combined cladding and free-standing gabion bespoke solution. The maximum height of which reaches 9 metres for a total of over 1000 sq metres of gabion façade.
Following the success of this and similar challenges such as the London Olympic Park project, Maccaferri has once again proved its leadership in providing design, supply and installation of high architectural bespoke and tailor made solutions and will be starting 2016 with a new 13 metre high gabion façade project at London Stonegrove Church.
