A Gabion and Terramesh retaining structure recently devised by Maccaferri was chosen for its economic and structural benefits
Maccaferri not only provides solutions fit for infrastructure projects; we offer numerous standard and customized systems for works located in urban areas. A recent project in South Wales aptly exemplifies this. Maccaferri Construction was awarded with the contract to build a retaining structure to retain the gardens of new Taylor Wimpey houses being built in Allt Yr Yn Avenue, Newport.
Due to the structural and economic benefits, Area Engineer Alex Jones determined that the Gabion Terramesh system would offer an ideal solution. The wall exhibits changes in elevation and retains 1.5 – 4m height. From the project photos, the locally sourced Gabion stone is neatly placed to minimise voids within the Terramesh gabion fascia elements. Taylor Wimpey has built new homes ranging from 2-5 bedroom houses that are surrounded by beautiful landscapes and countryside.
Following assembly and filling of the fascia units, structural backfill is then placed upon the soil reinforcement geogrids and compacted. Subsequent Terramesh layers are placed onto the completed layer beneath. This produces an aesthetically pleasing, long lasting installation which complements the environment as opposed to disturbing it.
