Maccaferri delivers a Green Terramesh solution for the D1 Highway modernization project
The D1 highway project located between Prague and Brno uses Green Terramesh as a successful means for modernization.
The transportation infrastructure sector in Slovakia has greatly benefitted from Maccaferri’s mesh systems. Highway projects such as the D1 Fricovce-Svinia project, or the D1 Highway refurbishment project between Prague and Brno (section 06 Psáře – Soutice), demonstrate this.
A reinforced soil structure with a 60° front face angle was constructed to help widen the highway using Maccaferri’s Green Terramesh; an environmentally friendly modular soil reinforcement system. The pre-fabricated units of double twisted steel wire hexagonal mesh are lined with an erosion control blanket and stiffened with a welded mesh panel. The units are connected with pre-formed steel braces at the job site to maintain the unit to the slope angle. As all components are assembled and attached in our factories, there is no assembly (other than erecting the front face) at the job-site.
At the D1 job site, section 06 (EXIT 49 Psáře – EXIT 56 Soutice), 2-3 rows of Green Terramesh units measuring 0.58 and 0.73 m in high, by 3 m long and an inclination of 60°, were installed.
The soil reinforcement structures made from Maccaferri Green Terramesh were required on both sides of the highway reconstruction. The construction company has completed one side of the highway, and will continue working on the opposite side this spring (2017). By steepening the face of the earthworks either side of the carriageway, the footprint of the widening works is reduced, saving the highway authority money. Green Terramesh is also designed to vegetate – the end result will be a steep faced green slope requiring minimal maintenance.
