The 2016 meeting in Baguio opens off the innovation in engineering.
The annual convention and exhibition of the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association was held last November in Baguio City at the Camp John Hay Convention Center and offered an opportunity to reestablish links with many of the key players in mining.
It also allowed both Maccaferri Philippines and Infratex Environmental Services Inc., one wholly-owned subsidiary, to showcase a wide range of products suitable for the industry. Of particular interest this year was our wide range of erosion control products and rockfall materials. We also displayed hydroseeding mulches and biotic soil media which can be used in conjunction with our erosion control products.
This annual conference is considered to be one of the most important events of the year for Maccaferri. However, there has been little growth in the mining sector throughout the last few years and 2016 is likely to see a resurgence of mining activities. The event allowed us to reintroduce ourselves to new players in the industry and reacquaint ourselves with the more established players.
Presidential elections will occur in Q2, 2016; the new President is likely to lift the moratorium on mining activities, expand the areas where mining exploration can take place, allow reopening of mines and encourage the industry to grow significantly. The Philippines is extremely rich in mineral deposits, a resurgence in mining activities will benefit the whole nation.
Maccaferri Philippines’ close association and working partnership with Profile Products LLC (PPL) saw this convention as an excellent opportunity to introduce hydroseeding products which complement our erosion control products. International Business Manager, Derek Oosterhouse of PPL was present at our booth for the whole event. Late afternoon on the last day of the exhibition and conference, after the technical conference concluded, participants and visitors were invited to watch a short demonstration of hydroseeding. This raised many questions and showed there is a high level of interest for engineered mulches.
One of the factors which has contributed to the state of the Philippine mining industry is the environment. There is a high degree of environmental awareness and this is driving the industry towards responsible mining practices, site rehabilitation and the prevention of the deleterious impact of surface mining. We are pleased to say this opens the door for both Maccaferri and our sister company, Infratex, to offer our complete range of products as they have always been committed to develop environment friendly solutions. Since the convention, Maccaferri has fielded a number of inquiries resulting directly from the exhibition.
