MacFlex and MacGanics prove to be an excellent choice in mine site rehabilitation
The 63rd Annual National Mine Safety & Environment Conference is a key mining conference and exhibit. It was held on November 15-18, 2016 in the Mountain City of Baguio, Cordilleras Autonomous Region. Maccaferri Philippines, together with its subsidiary, Infratex Environmental Services, Inc. were part of this exhibit again. Taking one of the larger exhibit spaces, Maccaferri and Infratex showcased numerous products that can be used in mine site rehabilitation, restitution, recovery and closure, in particular MacFlex and MacGanics.
The 63rd Annual National Mine Safety & Environment Conference was held on November 15-18, 2016 in the Mountain City of Baguio, Cordilleras Autonomous Region. In the last 10 years, this key mining conference and exhibit has attracted all the major industry players and this year was no exception.
Key issues discussed during the technical conference, functions, networking and social events were the current state of the industry and the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) initiatives in auditing compliance with mine and environmental safety standards. Since mid-2016, a number of mines have had permits suspended, cancelled or revoked.
Maccaferri Philippines, together with its subsidiary, Infratex Environmental Services, Inc. were pleased to be part of this exhibit again. Taking one of the larger exhibit spaces, Maccaferri and infratex showcased numerous products that can be used in mine site rehabilitation, restitution, recovery and closure.
Much of our exhibit space was given over to our newest addition to Maccaferri product lines. MacFlex High Performance Flexible Growth Medium (HP-FGM) and MacGanics Biotic Soil Media (BSM) are both excellent choices for hydroseeding projects. Given that mine sites often have large distressed and disturbed areas where topsoil has been lost to clearing, erosion and changes in topography, Maccaferri’s ProGanics provides a highly effective solution. As an alternative to placement of expensive, hard to source topsoil, MacGanics provides sufficient growth medium to quickly establish long term vegetation of the site.
Areas where steep slopes abound, which typically lose much of the surface soil and nutrients to erosion and run off can be effectively protected by rapidly establishing vegetation. In the past, this has been very hard to do since hydroseeding mulches do not adhere to steep slopes. That is until the advent of MacFlex; a product which will chemically and mechanically bond to substrates on slopes up to eighty degrees without the necessity of installing erosion controls mats or blankets.
Using the right seed mixes (typically legumes, vines and a fast-germinating nursery seed type), areas can quickly gain a thick, healthy, vegetative cover improving the appearance of distressed sites.
Other products showcased at the exhibit included Maccaferri’s gabions and mattresses, woven and non-woven geotextiles, rockfall drapery systems and barriers, HDPE pipes and liners. We are proud that in the mining industry, Maccaferri products are seen to be highly effective addressing many of the construction issues typically encountered on mine sites.
