Maccaferri Philippines engaged a rehabilitation work after Typhoon Koppu
After a year of struggling to compete in the Rockfall sector due to misused government regulations and standards, Maccaferri Philippines has finally worked its way around the obstacles previously precluding competitive participation in this sector.
The Cordilleras Autonomous Region (CAR) and other mountainous provinces in North Luzon were hit badly by the last major typhoon in 2015. As a Category 4 super typhoon, Typhoon Koppu (Lando) swung through Northern Luzon in mid-October. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Lando caused damage to infrastructure and agriculture worth US$22M, making it the most destructive typhoon to hit the Philippines so far this year.
Lando, the 12th storm to hit the Philippines in 2015, struck northern Luzon on October 18th and took a week to cross the island, bringing intense rain and peak winds of 185 kilometers per hour and leaving 47 people dead, 82 others injured and four missing. A number of roads were washed out or blocked with landslides.
In November, 2015, meetings with government officials determined the need for roads and transportation links to be repaired with greater emphasis on preventive measures against erosion, landslips and floods. Our ability to provide design assistance and offer creative ways of addressing areas of high risk makes Maccaferri Philippines an ideal partner for both Government and contractors engaged in rehabilitation work. We have (and continue to) delivered presentations of Maccaferri’s rockfall solutions and erosion control products. Specific emphasis has been on alternative materials and strategies to some of the more conventional designs which have not stood up well to the typical natural disasters faced by the Philippines every year.
We believe that we are well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities that 2016 will bring in the areas of erosion prevention and control and rockfall protection, prevention and mitigation.
