High Performance and Economical Basal Reinforcement in Calero, Cebu City

A coconut and vegetable oil manufacturing facility in Cebu City requires a cost-effective and durable solution for the ground improvement works of its two new expansion tanks with capacities of 5.4 million liters each. The ground is underlain with soft soil having an insufficient bearing capacity for shallow foundation. The initial design called for driven piles but was deemed too expensive by the owners.

To improve the bearing capacity and reduce the differential settlement, the geotechnical engineer proposed a geogrid-reinforced foundation pad consisting of multiple layers of cross-laid MacGrid WG sandwiched within a compacted structural backfill. Maccaferri was engaged to provide design and technical assistance in this undertaking.

Maccaferri’s Mactex  N (non-woven geotextile), a mechanically bonded non-woven geotextile from 100% ultraviolet stabilized continuous filament polyester, was used as a separation material. It has high resistance to installation damage, high water permeability, resistance to ultraviolet degradation, and to biological and chemical environments normally found in soils. Furthermore, cross-laid layers of Maccaferri’s MacGrid WG, a geogrid for soil reinforcement made from high tenacity polyester multifilament yarns that are resistant to biological degradation, were installed.

Geo-Struct Engineering Consultants, the consultant, and EC Calderon Construction Development Inc., the general contractor commenced work in March 2021.
