How Maccaferri has adapted its MacMat solution as part of the City of Music project in Europe
The City of Music of “Ile Seguin” is a set of buildings shaped in the form of a vessel. The building is dedicated to all kinds of music, and it is open to the public. It can accommodate various events including artistic, political, festive and commercial events. It is located at the downstream tip of the Ile Seguin in Boulogne-Billancourt in the Hauts-de-Seine.
The construction of the City of Music is a unique project in France and Europe. The whole program is developed on a land strip measuring approximately 280 meters alongside the Seine. Construction began in 2014 for delivery in 2017.
The musical city responds to particularly demanding environmental requirements. Integration into the site is contingent on the quality and treatment of each of the facades. The goal is to create highly vegetated areas that are publicly available on most of the terraces that cover the whole of the City. It is in this context that Maccaferri has been chosen to design a solution that meets these requirements and to develop a “green infrastructure” that limits surface water runoff problems.
The solution developed by Maccaferri is to “dress” the domed roof of the city of music with vagetating slopes. For roof slopes of 15 to 35 degrees, gabion mattress of 40cm thick, filled up to 70% with 30% stones and topsoil were installed. Given the low angle of friction between the insulation and the gabion mattresses, concrete pads were provided in the structure to ensure that the gabion structure is such that it presses against the wall.
For slopes ranging from 0 to 15 degrees, the solution consists in establishing two levels of Macmat R geomats (such as Macmat) that are reinforced with double twist wire mesh. The first layer located beneath 40 cm of topsoil as a key layer and the second layer founded at mid-height within the soil.
The Macmat located at the base is cut around the concrete pads. A calculation of stability of the thin layer of soil on slope was performed according to the standard dimensioning XPG38 067 to verify the tensile strength of Macmat R required.
The Macmat solution was anchored by securing it to gabions previously installed on the roof tops.
The green roof has a total area of approximately 15,000 m2.
