The NEWMAP addresses gully erosion in Auchi, Edo state

Gabions and Reno Mattresses are used to protect communities and infrastructure in vulnerable city

The erosion of the gullies in Auchi city represents a constant threat to the residents as it leads to loss of homes and farmland and damages the highways linking them to the neighboring communities. The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) tackled this problem with the help of a local consultant. Our gabions and Reno Mattresses® were used to address erosion of the top-soil, to stabilize the gully bed and to reduce water velocity.

Auchi is in the Etsako West Local Government Area of the Edo state, Nigeria. It is the second largest city in the Edo state after the capital, Benin City.

According to local inhabitants, the gullies had been forming for over 30 years with a crippling effect on the economy of the town. The formation of the gullies was due to improper land use and poor drainage systems which led to gradual removal of protective vegetation and ultimately to erosion. The people of Auchi prompted the intervention of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project who involved the local consultant Jagal Nigeria Limited to find a solution.

Jagal proposed the construction of proper drainage systems that would be channeled to safe discharge points downstream. Bioremediation was also proposed for revegetation of the slopes.

Our Reno Mattresses® and gabions will reduce flow velocity and prevent soil erosion.

The project is currently ongoing.
