Maccaferri Malaysia recently built a Rockfall protection using its customized Rockfall Barrier.
Eco Terraces is a condominium development located in Air Itam, in the Penang Island. The client, Eco Terraces Development Sdn. Bhd. is part of the Eco World Development Group Berhad, a public listed Company involved mainly in property development.
This Group is well known for their lush landscaping in all their property projects. Penang is located in the Northwest of the Peninsular Malaysia, and it is divided into two parts – the island and the mainland. In its prospering economy, Penang, especially the island, thrives in property development.
With an area of just 295 km2, high demands in housing are pushing the development towards deeper inland and to higher ground. The Eco Terraces is one of the few developments with more land dedicated to landscaping compared to built-up areas. Residents will be pampered amidst the green and serene surrounding, a welcoming escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The development site harmonized well the surrounding nature. Parts of the site are positioned next to a series of rocky hills, some of which measure 30 meters in height. This particular area is being built to a recreational pond at the toe of a rock cliff, which is also serving as a catch ditch. The project consultant proposed a rockfall barrier to prevent rocks from hurdling out of the catch ditch.
Following a thorough assessment procedure, Maccaferri concluded that the required Maximum Energy Level capacity based on the bouncing rock from the trench, is 750 kJ. Maccaferri’s professional team proposed to install a four-meter-high Rockfall Barrier RB750, onto the identified location in collaboration with the consultant. The construction of this installation took about six weeks to complete; having installed 15 upslope anchors, two lateral anchors, the casing of 14 footings, assembly of 14 posts and cables; and 130m of the barrier containment mesh.
