Maccaferri recently co-organized for the first time a Boulder Fence Model Design competition with the support of the Institution of Engineering Malaysia.
The STEM-focused event was held in Penang, Malaysia and was a success: 22 schools have sent their representatives to participate.
Last June, Maccaferri has successfully co-organized a Boulder Fence Model Design Competition together with the Institution of Engineering Malaysia. The event, aimed at promoting the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) academic disciplines, was held at 1st Avenue Mall, Penang.
The main objective the event was to create awareness to the students and the public on landslide hazards especially in the Penang State and to inspire interest in engineering in these young students.
The competition required participants to build a boulder fence and test their engineering creativity with the limited resources given. Several aspects of engineering solutions such as sustainability, aesthetics and durability had to be evaluated. During the competition, high school students also had to demonstrate their ability in designing an engineering solution within a given scope and through critical thinking, problem-solving capabilities, teamwork and creativity.
Maccaferri Malaysia’s Managing Director, Mr. Ugo Castellotti, represented the company as one of the industry experts to form the panel of judges of the event. A total of 22 groups of students from various schools across Penang took part in this event. The group with the best boulder fence model design was finally awarded appealing prizes.
