A section on highway 575:04, located northeast of Drumheller in Alberta\u2019s Canadian Badlands, experienced persistent slope instability driven by steep, erodible geology and progressive <\/span>weathering. <\/span><\/a>At C017\u2011I<\/strong> and C017\u2011III<\/strong> (Hwy 575:04, km 26.631\u201326.050), progressive slope failures threaten the carriageway on the steep ~2H:1V<\/strong> Red Deer River valley side\u2011hill. C017\u2011I<\/strong> is a shallow embankment failure ~30\u202fm<\/strong> wide extending ~15\u202fm<\/strong> downslope from the crest; the highway sits on a 24\u202fm<\/strong> side\u2011hill sliver fill over a natural slope. C017\u2011III<\/strong> is a moderately deep\u2011seated slide (~5\u20136\u202fm<\/strong> deep via 2019 inclinometer), ~60\u202fm<\/strong> wide and propagating ~25\u202fm<\/strong> down a ~50\u202fm\u2011high<\/strong> slope. Badlands saline\u2013sodic soils<\/strong> and winter maintenance debris in the ditches severely limit revegetation, compounding erosion and stability risks. The project must arrest slide movement<\/strong>, protect the road<\/strong>, and minimize disturbance<\/strong> in challenging geotechnical and environmental. <\/span><\/p>\n

Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) was retained to assess the site and recommend a long-term stabilization and protection strategy for the failing slope.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

KCB assessment recommended hollow steel\u2011bar soil nails<\/strong> (\u00d8 200\u202fmm<\/strong>, 14\u202fm<\/strong> long) at 10\u00b0<\/strong> to the slope face, on a grid 1.5\u202fm (v)<\/strong> \u00d7 2.0\u202fm (h)<\/strong>\u2014three rows at C017\u2011I<\/strong>, four rows at C017\u2011III. <\/strong>KCB wanted to go with a composite system which had high tensile strength and Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) and hence Maccaferri’s MacMat R1 Steel was specified. The total area covered with TRM was 1500 sqm.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>
