Maccaferri at the 15th Asphalt, Pavement Engineering & Infrastructure Conference

Maccaferri presented two geosynthetics papers on 24-25th Feb 2016 in Liverpool.

Run in association with the Department of Civil Engineering of John Moores University, this conference has covered topics on the development, construction of asphalt technology, environmental issues, aggregate recycling issues, airport and highways design and maintenance.

Nico Brusa, from Maccaferri Ltd, presented a paper on Asphalt Reinforcement through Geosynthetic: Design Method and UK Experience and Pietro Pezzano from Officine Maccaferri S.p.A. Italy presented a paper entitled “Base Stabilisation and Asphalt Reinforcement for Airport Runway Extension: Design Methodology & Experience.”

Base stabilization and asphalt reinforcement for airport runway extension: design methodology and experience

The airport expansion is a design challenge for every engineer involved in the various aspects of the project.

Pavement engineering are then faced with different methodology in order to design the runway and taxiway structures. The use of geosynthetics reinforcement, to increase the bearing capacity of the foundation layers and in asphalt reinforcement, is becoming a standard in the flexible pavements but no design method are today available for the airport design.

The most popular design methods and software for design airport structures are based on the dynamic modulus of the various layers but they does not take cares of the geosynthetics improvements.

The aim of this paper is therefore proposing a design method based on the road structures design where the design of the geosynthetics is already available. Starting from the design aircraft’s gear a comparison with the passages of EALF standard axle load is provided. Once the load is defined the possibility to use the road software is open and we could demonstrate the improving of the geosynthetics into the design.

The paper explores the difference between the axle load of a truck and the aircraft gear showing the calculation procedures and providing an innovative engineering design approach.

Asphalt reinforcement through geosynthetics: design method and UK experience

Traffic volumes on Britain’s roads have never been higher and significant increase in traffic levels over the coming years is more than a virtual certainty. These high levels of traffic loading, particularly from heavy commercial and transport vehicles, put considerable strain on the road network’s overall capacity.

Over the past decade, the geotechnical industry has developed a range of geosynthetics reinforcement system optimized for increasing the performance and durability of the pavements and also for reinforcement to reduce the asphalt thickness or to improve the traffic loading capacity.

Design methods have been development over the years and allow designer to have a feeling for the benefit of using asphalt reinforcement geosynthetics

This paper aims to analyze what has been done so far, the solutions available nowadays, from the research available, design criteria, product choice and installation criteria. This paper will describe and analyse also some real case studies and actual applications done in the UK 10-15 years ago understanding the condition and of the pavement prior to repair and after some years of refurbished pavement serviceability.

The successful case histories presented at the end of the paper confirm by practical experience the soundness of the described design method and engineering solution proposed.
