Maccaferri elected in the Board of Directors of the GSI

Moreno Scotto, Corporate Manager of Maccaferri’s Geosynthetics Business Unit, will sit on the Board until 2020

Moreno Scotto, International Manager of Maccaferri’s Geosynthetics Business Unit, has been re-elected as member of the Board of Directors of the prestigious Geosynthetic Institute (GSI), founded by Robert M. Koerner. Already on the Board from 2015 to 2017, Moreno will remain in office for another three-year period, from 2018 to 2020.

Founded around thirty years ago by Robert M. Koerner, a leading expert on geosynthetics, GSI is a historic institution in the USA, conducting applied research on the engineering aspects of geosynthetics and then actively transferring knowledge of these materials and their applications. It is an international point of reference in the development of test methods, standards of practice, standard guides, and product specifications for manufacturing, design and installation. It also provides and implements geosynthetic certification and accreditation procedures.

“This makes me proud and encourages me to constantly seek new opportunities to collaborate for the growth of the geosynthetics market”

– Moreno Scotto, Geosynthetics Business Unit Corporate Manager @ Maccaferri

GSI currently consists of 71 member organizations of which nearly half have an international presence. These include governmental agencies, facility owners, designers, consultants, QC and QA organizations, testing laboratories, raw material suppliers, manufacturers, manufacturer’s representatives and installation contractors; in essence the entire geosynthetics supply chain.

“I would like to thank my fellow Members for the trust they have placed in me,” Moreno Scotto commented following his re-election in the Board of Directors of GSI. “There are only two international non-US Members in the Board, making this an even more special appointment for me. This makes me proud and encourages me to constantly seek new opportunities to collaborate for the growth of the geosynthetics market.”

Maccaferri entered the geosynthetics market in 1997 and the intervening 20 years has seen us become one of the leading players in the global market. “Geosynthetics currently account for around 25% of our turnover and are our second largest contributor after our historic Double Twisted steel wire mesh products”, Scotto explained, then added: “The geosynthetics market is huge and constantly growing but there is no true global market leader. We aim to expand the overall market for geosynthetics in construction and naturally expand our production footprint around the world, leveraging on our positioning as technical partners. Geosynthetics are an important component of our projects; increasingly complex engineering solutions to solve infrastructure, environmental and landscaping problems. Accordingly, our success is not simply linked to production capacity but depends largely on our ability to provide engineering solutions that meet the demands of our clients. Our challenge is to become a technical reference point for the market”, Scotto concluded.

Moreno Scotto’s profile

PE Graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1989, Moreno Scotto has immediately based his career on independent consultancy specialized in geosynthetics and environmental applications. He cooperated with numerous international European companies to develop the Italian market (Exxon Chemical Geopolymers Ltd, Naue Gmbh, Huesker Gmbh, Siplast, SGS/GSE) as Sales-Technical manager of Italian geosynthetics companies.

In 1997 Scotto joined Maccaferri to develop the geosynthetics and environmental business. He is Italian delegate to the CEN 189 committees: WG1 for asphalt reinforcement applications and geomembranes for use in landfills and WG3 for mechanical tests. He was a Member of the Board of Directors of AGI-IGS (Italian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society) in 2004-2008-2012.
