Saptashrungi Temple Case History is a highlight of Dr. Manoj Verman’s Short Course on Rock Slope Engineering


Maccaferri teamed up with Dr. Manoj Verman to share expertise and best practices on rockfall and landslide protection

Rockfall and landslides are among the ten most comment disaster types around the world. Dr. Manoj Verman took a step to educate institutions and corporations on rock slope behavior with a short course in New Delhi, from June 27th-30th, 2017. We were Knowledge Partner and brought to the course our experience and best practices related to rock slope engineering, covering landslide and rockfall mitigation measures. Our Saptashrungi Gad Temple Case History was the perfect example of a challenging rockfall project which required advanced study and technology.

Dr. Manoj Verman, President of the International Commission on Hard Rock Excavation, was the key speaker of this four-day event, which can be considered the most comprehensive short course in rock slope engineering in India. Topics covered included the basics of rock mechanics, Structural Geology and data interpretation, types of rock failures, kinematic analysis etc.

Maccaferri India’s experts Ms. Kinjal Parmar, Mr. Deeraj Kumar, Ms. Meenu P. S., Mr. Dinesh Singh Kolar, Mr. Devendra V. and Mr. Trinadh N. teamed up to share their knowledge and experience with two presentations on landslide and rockfall mitigation measures.

An interesting selection of project case histories demonstrated our knowledge and expertise in site analysis and geotechnical/geophysical investigations, definition of input parameters, design of our mitigation systems with practical application of our products.

The analysis and design of our advanced rockfall mitigation measures for the Saptashrungi Gad Temple in particular received great attention, in the light of the rockfall event at the temple this June (12th), when our dynamic barrier helped save 100 lives. The challenging conditions of this site made it a very complex project, and earned it international acclaim with a shortlisting as finalist for International Project of the Year at the 2017 Ground Engineering Awards.

Our expert team shared their knowledge and design analysis which were carried out with the most advanced software to understand the potential loads exerted by rock debris accumulation within the HEA Panels (High Energy Absorption) used to stabilize the rock face and to analyze the suitable location for the positioning of our dynamic rockfall barrier above the temple and pilgrim path.

Among the many other interesting case histories presented, were the rockfall protection measures implemented at the Khandala and Adoshi tunnels along the Mumbai-Pune expressway after a major rockfall event in 2015, and the landslide mitigation measures after the Lambagarh devastating landslide on the on the NH 58 to Badrinath in 2013.

The course was successfully delivered to 50 participants representing government bodies such as BRO, NHPC, HPPCL, Northern Railway, Sanjen Jalvidhyut, SJVN, KRCL, UJVN; various renowned companies such as IRCON, Dilip Buildcon, ILFS, AIMIL, WAPCOS, GR Infraprojects, Spar Geo Infra, Gripple, Uttam blast tech, Infinite Civil Solutions and various academicians from King Abdul Aziz University, Pachhunga University College, NIT Hamirpur, Tribhuvan University.
