Maccaferri showcases Gabion and Terramesh products at a Technical Seminar in New Delhi (4th-5th Feb 2016).
A technical seminar on various developments and innovations made in track and bridge technology in the Railway Sector in India took place in New Delhi from the 4th to the 5th of February. The seminar was organised by the Institution of Permanent Way Engineers—a scientific body, playing a vital role in spreading technical knowledge among railwaymen regarding design maintenance and construction of permanent way, bridges and other structures.
The seminar discussed the design, construction and maintenance of station yards. Discussions centred around accelerated construction of New Lines/Doubling Projects and Fast Track Construction of ROBs/RUBs.
In light of the discussion topic, Maccaferri India presented one Case Study on (1) the subject of Slope Stabilisation, and Rockfall netting along the Konkan Railway and (2) a Project Testimonial on Landslide Mitigation works solved with Terramesh systems along the Southern Railways. Both technical documents were discussed extensively at the Maccaferri India Exhibition booth. Honorable Minister of State for Railways, Sir Manoj Sinha, visited Maccaferri’s exhibition booth, Maccaferri Engineers Mr. Salil and Mr. Sourabh were privileged and happy to welcome the honorable minister and explain the contributions of Maccaferri Solutions to Railway sector. The honourable railways minister, Manoj Sinha, visited the Maccaferri booth and consulted with our engineers, Mr. Salil and Mr. Sourabh.

Konkan Railway Project can be considered as one of the most prestigious projects in the construction industry of India. Established in 1989 the existing railways needed to undergo substantial refurbishment. Such interventions included the construction and widening of the track. This process necessitated the use of several technological innovations to cut large quantities of rocks of lateritic and basaltic origin. Affected by erosion, the lateritic terrains lost cohesiveness and strength—thus becoming very vulnerable to causing heavy slides and slips. Moreover, the ballast which was laid down below the tracks, needed refurbishment.
Maccaferri India provided various sound solutions in response to the faced challenges. Maccaferri Gabion walls with a stepped rear face were adopted in many vulnerable stretches of hill cuttings of Konkan Railway. Gabion walls were selected due to their flexibility, speed in construction and sensitive draining nature.
Backfill soil was carefully selected ensuring the omission of the clayey soil. Additional arrangements included the provision of a transverse drainage system, comprising of 2.9mm Dia heavy duty PVC pipes laid to carry water away from the foundation made up lateritic soil.
