Maccaferri Gabions & Reno Mattresses for coastal protection

An erosion mitigation solution was developed by Maccaferri for a coastal protection project in Kenjeran, East Java, Indonesia

Reno Mattresses and gabions function both underwater and above and a recent project in East Java, Indonesia, is an example of this. The project was completed last year (2016).

How does one protect a residential area located close by the sea from a continuously eroding seaside? The answer is simple: you create a seawall defence as this project in Kenjeran, Indonesia, demonstrates.

A residential area located in Kenjeran (East Java) needed protection against the ongoing severe erosion processes caused by tidal currents. Similarly to a previous project in Bali, Maccaferri devised a Gabion, Reno Mattress solution to address the problem. Maccaferri proposed a 5m high and 340 m long gabion sea wall to protect the existing soil embankment from erosion.

The solution was designed to ensure that even in the case of severe scouring due to tidal currents, the flexible structure of the Reno Mattress is able to accommodate the foundation deformations.

A non-woven geotextile (MacTex) with a filtration function was placed between the Reno mattress, gabions and backfilling material. this prevents fine soils being washed out from behind / beneath the units by the movement of water. All the stability checks of the sea wall were performed using the Maccaferri software—MacStars W 4.0.

Maccaferri provided the client with jobsite supervision and the contractor with installation assistance to ensure that the construction and installation standards were properly followed.

The construction of the sea wall started in May 2016 and was completed in November 2016.
