Erosion Control System Using the Polybag Method at the Tiu Suntuk Dam, Sumbawa

The construction of the Tiu Suntuk dam in West Nusa Tenggara means that the slopes in the area need to be protected from surface erosion. The total area that needs to be protected is 4,740 m2. To reduce slope surface erosion, erosion control solutions from Maccaferri were selected using MacMat® HS coupled with vegetation for long-term surface erosion mitigation. The Polybag method is used to prevent damage to vegetation growth due to the presence of monkeys near the construction site.

The Tiu Suntuk Dam is one of the PSN (National Strategic Projects) projects for the construction of dams in West Nusa Tenggara. For the dam’s construction, the slopes in the area were cut leading to the slopes needing to be protected from surface erosion. The total area that needs to be protected is 4,740 m2. The initial solution to protect slopes from surface erosion is to use the shotcrete method. However, to support the Ministry of Public Works program for green solutions, some areas are designated to be protected with an erosion control system.

After trials were carried out at the site, the obstacle faced was the presence of monkeys found near the construction area that ate LCC seeds and inhibited vegetation growth. Therefore, innovation and effective solutions are needed to prevent further damage to vegetation.

To reduce slope surface erosion, the erosion control solution from Maccaferri was chosen due to its easy application, permeable material, and competitive price. The material used is MacMat® HS as a starting material to protect steep slopes and is combined with vegetation for long-term surface erosion mitigation. In relation to the presence of monkeys near the construction site, the Polybag Method was chosen to prevent damage to vegetation growth. The Polybag method is an implantation method that involves planting LCC seeds in polybags first and then planting the early stages of vegetation growth on the slopes. This method provides significant and effective vegetation growth and is suitable for the project’s proximity to monkey territory so that the seeds are not eaten by the monkeys.
