Maccaferri Hellas presents rockfall barriers at the 1st International Conference on Natural Hazards & Infrastructure.

We will be participating in the 1st edition of the Conference that will take place in the Island of Crete on 28-30 of June 2016.

We are proud to announce that Maccaferri Hellas is participating in the first International Conference On Natural Hazards & Infrastructure, which will be held in Chania, Crete Island. We have therefore prepared an abstract which was accepted for presentation on 30th of March. The subject of the paper, which we submitted to the conference, is about the design approach of rockfall barriers. Rockfall protection and natural hazard mitigation are key elements in the safety of infrastructures. In Greece, most of the designers are not aware of the new UNI standards that can be a good guide for the design approach.

Our target is to show engineers the basic steps that need to be followed in order to create a good design with rockfall barriers. Following the results of the ETAG tests, and assuming that this is the maximum energy that the barrier can withstand, is not enough in most cases. The reason is that this calculation approach has a high level of uncertainty due to the difficulties in defining the input data, the installation issues and the different performance of a barrier, which has a different configuration from the one tested. Taking into account these aspects, designers should introduce in their designs, safety coefficients able to increase the energy acting on the structure and reduce the resistance of the fence.

Maccaferri, which has great experience in this field, uses the European Guideline ETA-G027:2008 and the Italian UNI standard, as references for rockfall barrier design.

The 1st International Conference On Natural Hazards & Infrastructure will take place on 28-30 of June, you can find the letter of our General Manager, George Dimenas.
