New cell increases waste capacity of non-hazardous Spanish landfill
Our innovative geosynthetic products were used to create a new cell and increase the capacity of Grupo Hera’s Pujalt Landfill in Catalunya. We were able to satisfy the client’s requirements for a safe and effective solution for environmental protection and sustainability with a combination of our MacLine®, MacDrain® and MacTex® products.
The available volume and therefore the capacity are fundamental to the usable life of a landfill site and as a result is both a precious commodity and overriding problem.
Grupo Hera, leader in the sector of integrated waste management and environmental interventions, approached us to help increase the capacity of its Pujalt Landfill in Catalunya. The site is used for the collection and treatment of non-hazardous industrial waste and a new cell was needed to increase the available volume and extend the usable life of the landfill. The cell will enable the rubbish to be compacted, covered with soil and compacted further.
We designed a solution that included a waterproof geomembrane base system overlaid and protected by a heavy duty 800 g/m2 geotextile. A layer of gravel was laid onto this to provide a drainage system and finally another geotextile to provide a separation and filter function.
Since the waste at the Pujalt Landfill is non-hazardous, only one impermeable membrane barrier was required and consisted of a 1.5 mm thick high-density polyethylene geombrane; installed on the base and up the side slopes of the cell. For the drainage media on the side slopes, the traditional gravel drainage was replaced by the use of a MacDrain drainage geocomposite. This compact drainage system provides equivalent drainage capacity of the gravel but within a much thinner layer; easier to install and with the additional benefit of increasing the available volume for waste in the cell.
For this project, Maccaferri provided:
- 9600 m2 of MacLine® SDH 150 high density polyethylene geomembrane, smooth on both faces, as a waterproofing system
- 5160 m2 of MacDrain® W1051 drainage geocomposite made by a polypropylene tri-dimensional core, W-shaped, coupled with two non-woven polypropylene geotextiles through heat bonding
- 6600 m2 of MacTex® N40.1 non-woven polypropylene geotextile needle-punched with a mass per unit area of 200 g/m2
- 9504 m2 of MacTex® P300.1 non-woven polypropylene geotextile needle-punched with a mass per unit area of 800 g/m2 as a protection layer
