Road Safety is Restored Along Jalan Tun Sardon, Penang

Slope erosion and landslides were prevented by building a retaining wall with our Terramesh® System

During heavy downpours, road safety is threatened by frequent landslides along Jalan Tun Sardon, a major road in Penang. Thanks to our consolidated expertise in erosion control, the local authorities called on us for technical assistance. The problem was solved with the construction of a retaining wall to prevent slope erosion. Our Terramesh® System provided a sustainable as well as cost-effective solution.

Jalan Tun Sardon is a major road in Penang that was built to cut across the central hill linking Balik Pulau on the West Coast to Paya Terubong and Relau on the East Coast. The road was named after the former Penang Governor and it winds its way steeply across the hills. The local authorities were concerned with road safety during heavy downpours, as these often resulted in landslides of the unstable steep slopes.

For this reason, we were invited by the local authorities to provide technical assistance and subsequently proposed our Terramesh® System to construct a soil reinforced retaining wall to support the friable slopes and prevent erosion.

Our renowned Terramesh® System is a Mechanical Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall system consisting of modular units with a gabion fascia and an integral geogrid tail. The facing element of the units is filled with suitable gabion stone fill (between 6 to 9 inches diameter) which is arranged manually for a better aesthetic result. Suitable earth structural backfill is then placed upon the soil reinforcement geogrids and compacted. The geogrids reinforce the soil, enabling it to perform better than it would do in its natural state.

The wall was completed in two and a half months, despite the difficulties encountered with accessing the site with machinery.
