New Terramesh wall completes route improvements from Sri Sendayan to Bandar Enstek


Maccaferri installs retaining wall Terramesh System in Malaysia

When the main road which connects the towns of Bandar Sri Sendayan and Bandar Enstek began to show signs of slope instability, Maccaferri was approached to provide a retaining structure. A 300 metre long and 6 to 8 metre high Terramesh System reinforced soil retaining wall was installed to facilitate the highway improvement works. Unforseen difficulties experienced midway through the project necessitated a re-design of the solution but Maccaferri successfully completed the project offering a cost-effective solution that fulfilled the client’s requirements.

Bandar Sri Sendayan is a township in the Rantau ward of Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Located within the borders of the Rantau state constituency, Bandar Sri Sendayan is a 20-minute drive from downtown Seremban via highway. Bandar Enstek is a new township in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan and it is located near the KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) Quarters and FELDA LB Johnson.

The project to improve the main road which connects the towns of Bandar Sri Sendayan and Bandar Enstek faced the problem of slope instability and Maccaferri were approached to provide a solution to facilitate the highway improvement works.

Using the expertise built up over 100 years of solving retaining structure problems, Maccaferri proposed a 300 metre long wall with a maximum height of 8 metres. The wall featured the renowned Terramesh soil reinforcement system used in conjunction with high performance primary geogrids. Woven and non-woven geotextiles were also used in the slope stabilisation.

During the works, the contractor encountered several challenges, including the unforseen difficulty in excavating the base for the Terramesh wall; large rocks were found at foundation level. This created delays in the excavation which had the potential to impact the overall project program. Working with the client, Maccaferri revised the initial design and proposed a solution to overcome these obstacles. This reduced the need to break out these large rocks, saving time and cost.

From its wide range of solutions, Maccaferri was able to provide a reinforced soil retaining wall to suit the clients’ technical needs; the soils being retained, the aesthetic requirements and budget.

The clients’ specific project needs were met with satisfaction.
