Reno Mattress as Erosion Control are used in Malaysia’s First Hybrid Off River Storage and Groundwater Collection Project
Launched in March 2014, the Hybrid Off River Augmentation System (HORAS 600) is the Selangor State Government’s solution to water woes during prolonged dry seasons. Absolute reliance on dam and surface water is not enough to sustain over a million consumers in the Klang Valley. Overpopulation thus leads to water rationing during times when the water level is at critical stages.
The RM 405 million project is built onto a former 235ha mining land in Kampung Sungai Darah, Selangor. This is the first hybrid project in Malaysia that is a combination of off-river storage concept and horizontal collector well, involving the accumulation of stormwater from Sungai Selangor (excess water from the use of existing plants and rainwater) and groundwater collection. Additionally, it will minimize wastage of rain water with the sustainable management of water resources and prevent the risk of downstream settlements.
The project can supply up to 600 million liters of clean water per day (MLD)—hence the origin of the project name, HORAS 600. The HORAS project is going to be carried out in two phases. The Phase 1 reservoir will supply water to three water treatment plants, which are SSP1, SSP3, and Rasah Treatment Plants. Phase 2 is expected to accommodate 3,000 to 5,000 MLD by the year 2020.
Bared and exposed, the collection pond is unprotected against the harsh sun, heavy rain and constant presence of water. Maccaferri’s Reno Mattress developed to control erosion is installed along the lake, thus protecting the surface via erosion control. The mattresses are produced from high quality, heavily galvanized wire with PVC coating. The PVC coating is applied for long-lasting protection against weathered conditions. The pond has a circumference area measured at about 5 kilometers; and 200,000 m2 of Reno Mattress is needed to cover the area.
